| biography:
| King of the United Kingdom (Jan–Dec 1936), born in Richmond, SW Greater London, UK, the eldest son of George V. He studied at Osborne, Dartmouth, and Oxford, joined the navy and (in World War 1) the army, travelled much, and achieved considerable popularity. He succeeded his father in 1936, but abdicated (11 Dec) in the face of opposition to his proposed marriage to Wallis Simpson, an American who had been twice divorced. He was then given the title of Duke of Windsor, and the marriage took place in France in 1937. They lived in Paris, apart from a period in the Bahamas (1940–5), where Edward was governor. He died in Paris and was buried at Windsor Castle. In recent years claims have been made that he was a Nazi sympathizer. |
