| Playwright, born in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, SC England, UK. He turned to writing plays when his business as a linen-draper failed. The comedy Gil Blas (1751), based on Lesage, and the tragedy The Gamester (1753), are his best-known productions. He also edited the weekly journal The World (1753–7). |
