| Geographer, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He studied at the University of Chicago (1942 PhD), and worked for US government agencies in the 1940s, including the Office of Special Services and the Joint Chiefs-of-Staff (1943–6). Professor of geography at the University of Washington (1951–76), he was a specialist in cities and transportation networks, serving as director for the Center for Urban and Regional Research (1967–9), and publishing The Economic Base of American Cities (1969). |
