| biography:
| Catholic prelate, born in Rochester, New York, USA. After studies and ordination in Rome and teaching posts in classics and theology, he was named auxiliary bishop (1912) then bishop (1915) of San Francisco. He also served (from 1917) as a spokesman for the Catholic War Council and (from 1919) as a leader of its successor, the National Catholic Welfare Council (later Conference). A progressive, he was attacked by some Catholics for ‘Americanism’. He stressed interfaith co-operation and helped settle a major longshoreman's strike in 1934. He retired in 1935 and moved to Rome. |
