| Explorer and archaeologist, born in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. Untrained in archaeology, geology, or fieldwork, he managed to get himself sent as US consul to Mexico (1885), expressly to investigate Maya sites, and for 40 years he sent back a stream of valuable artifacts and information, particularly from Chichén Itzá. His popular books stimulated public interest in Maya culture. |
