| Baseball manager and executive, born in Springfield, Illinois, USA. After managing the Detroit Tigers (1903–4), he led the Boston Red Sox to a World Series championship as their manager in 1918. He became general manager of the New York Yankees (1921–45), where he shaped the famous pennant-winning teams of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Joe DiMaggio. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953. |
