| Scholar, translator, and educator, born in Castle Rock, Colorado, USA. He earned an MA at Columbia University and taught Japanese at the University of Michigan (1966–77) and Columbia University (1977–85). He is best known for his masterly translation of the famous 11th-c Japanese novel, The Tale of Genji (1976). |
