| Judge and chief justice, born in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, USA. He was active in Louisiana politics and helped found Tulane University. He served one term in the US Senate (Democrat, Louisiana, 1891) before his nomination by President Cleveland to the US Supreme Court (1894–1910). President Taft appointed him chief justice (1910–21). |
