| Physician, naturalist, and explorer, born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, SWC England, UK. He first went to the Antarctic with Scott in the Discovery (1901–4). On his return to England he researched grouse diseases and made illustrations for books on birds and mammals. In 1910 he returned to the Antarctic on the Terra Nova as chief of the expedition's scientific staff. One of the party of five that reached the South Pole just after Roald Amundsen, he died with the others on the return journey. |
