| Dutch politician, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. After studying politics and social sciences at Amsterdam he worked for the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA) as their representative on Amsterdam Municipal Council (1965–71). He entered parliament in 1967 and led the parliamentary party (1973–7). In 1981 he became minister of internal affairs, but resigned with the other PvdA ministers in 1982. He was appointed Burgomaster of Amsterdam in 1983, resigning in 1994 when called upon to take up the ministry of internal affairs after the sudden death of the minister Dales. In 1978 he wrote a fascinating book on his experience as a cabinet former. Later he was UN observer of the OSCE in the Bosnian Civil War (1995–6). |
