| biography:
| Botanist, born in Warsaw, Poland. He studied botany in Paris, Bonn, and Jena, and spent his career at Jena (1869–80) and Bonn (1880–1912). In Über Zellbildung und Zellteilung (1876, Cell Formation and Cell Division) he laid down the basic principles of cytology, the study of cells, for which he made Bonn the world's leading centre. His work did much to show that mitosis (normal somatic cell division) in plants is a process essentially similar to that described for animal cells. Strasburger's Textbook of Botany, written with other botanists under his guidance, is a classic, with over 30 editions from 1894 onwards. |
