| French-speaking Caribbean poet and novelist, born in Martinique. His poems and novels record the struggle of African culture against colonialism. A follower of the poet Aimé Césaire, his own novel La Lézarde (1958) won the Prix Théophraste Renaudot. Other works include a play about the Haitian hero Toussaint L'Ouverture, Monsieur Toussaint (1961), and Pays rêvé, pays réel (1985). |
