| French statesman and prime minister (1933, 1934, 1938–40), born in Carpentras, SE France. In 1927 he became leader of the Radical Socialists, and in 1933 minister of war, and prime minister of a short-lived government, a pattern which was repeated in 1934. In 1936 he was minister of war in the Popular Front cabinet, and as premier (1938) supported appeasement policies and signed the Munich Pact. In 1940 he resigned, became successively war and foreign minister, and on the fall of France was arrested and interned until 1945. After the war he continued in politics until 1958. |
