| biography:
| US lawyer and statesman, born in Rumford, Maine, USA. He studied at Bates College and Cornell University, and after war service and private law practice entered the Maine legislature in 1947. He became Governor of Maine (1955–9), then state senator (1959–80), resigning to accept appointment as secretary of state under President Carter. He was Democratic candidate for the vice-presidency in 1968. |
