| Composer, born in Northampton, Northamptonshire, C England, UK. He studied at Reading and London, and developed an interest in the polyphonic music of the 16th–17th-c. He wrote 11 symphonies, chamber, choral and orchestral music, songs, and solo instrumental works. He taught at Oxford (1947–68), and became professor of composition at the Guildhall School of Music (1961–74). |
