| Scholar, and editor of Shakespeare, born in Dublin, Ireland. He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, devoted himself to literary work in London, and his 11-volume edition of Shakespeare (1790) was warmly received. He denounced the Shakespeare forgeries of William Henry Ireland, and left behind a large mass of materials for The Variorum Shakespeare, edited in 1821 by James Boswell (the Younger, 1778–1822). |
