| English politician, born in Maiden Bradley, Wiltshire, S England, UK. During the Civil War he served under Sir William Waller and Thomas Fairfax, and was returned for Wiltshire in 1646. Elected to the council of state, he was sent to Ireland as lieutenant-general of horse in 1651, but refused to recognize Cromwell's protectorate. He was member for Hindon in 1659, urged the restoration of the Rump Parliament, was nominated by John Lambert to the Committee of Safety, and strove in vain to reunite the Republicans. After the Restoration he escaped to Vevey in Switzerland. |
