| biography:
| Actor, born in London, UK. He became a strolling player, and after 10 years in the provinces made his first appearance at Drury Lane as Shylock (1814). A period of great success followed as a tragic actor, but because of his irregularities he gradually forfeited public approval, his reputation being finally ruined when he was successfully sued for adultery in 1825. He reintroduced a naturalistic style of acting that relied on movement and the beauty of the language, rather than the exaggerated, melodramatic delivery then in fashion. |
