| biography:
| King of the English for a few months in 1016, the son of Ethelred the Unready. He was chosen king by Londoners on his father's death (Apr 1016), while Canute was elected at Southampton by the Witan. Edmund hastily levied an army, defeated Canute, and attempted to raise the siege of London, but was routed at Ashingdon, or possibly Ashdon, Essex (Oct 1016). He agreed to a partition of the country, but died a few weeks later, leaving Canute as sole ruler. |
