| King of the English (939–46), the half-brother of Athelstan. On Edmund's accession, Scandinavian forces from Northumbria, reinforced by levies from Ireland, quickly overran the E Midlands. He re-established his control over the S Danelaw (942) and Northumbria (944) and, until his murder by an exile, ruled a reunited England. |
