| biography:
| US senator and journalist, born in Ashland, Ohio, USA. A newspaper editor-publisher, and framer of the Kansas constitution, he was appointed to the US Senate (Republican, Kansas, 1866–71). He voted against convicting President Andrew Johnson after deciding the trial was not fair. Politically and socially in disgrace as a result, he returned to practise journalism in Kansas, then moved to New Mexico, where he was appointed territorial governor (1885–9). |
