| Novelist and critic, born in Marseille, S France. He collaborated on many literary reviews, publishing poems, Une Âme d'Automne (1906), and novels, Le Jeune homme au masque (1905). Le Reste et le silence (1909) gained him the Prix Fémina, and La Fugitive (1926) is characteristic of his style. He returned to criticism with works on Poe, Rilke, and De Pascal à Barrès (1928) and L'Esprit des livres (1924–40). He was a member of the Académie Française. |
