| biography:
| Essayist and publicist, born in Dieuze, Lorraine, NE France. He studied at the Ecole Normale Supérieure and at the School of Athens. He began his writing career with a highly critical text, La Grèce Contemporaine (1854), and a controversial novel, Tolla. L'Homme à l'Oreille Cassée (1862) brought him much popular success, unlike his work for the theatre, Le Roi des montagnes (1857). Le Roman d'un brave homme (1880) is partly autobiographical. Closely connected to those in power, but anti-clerical, he became a republican after 1870. He retained the clear and easy style of journalism that he employed in Le Figaro, Le Gaulois, and Le Moniteur. |
