| Conductor and composer, born in Zadar, W Croatia (formerly Zara, Austria). He studied under Liszt, succeeded Mahler (1908) as conductor of the Vienna Court Opera, and later toured extensively in Britain and America. His works include operas, symphonies, and his famous pamphlet Uber das Dirigieren (1895, On Conducting). He became a Swiss citizen in 1937. |
