| biography:
| British soldier, born in London, UK. He accompanied the Russians as a volunteer against the Turks in 1828, and succeeded as third earl in 1839. As commander of cavalry in the Crimean War (1853–6), he is best remembered for interpreting an ambiguous order from Lord Raglan as a command directly to charge the Russian heavy artillery during the Battle of Balaclava (1854) - the ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’, with the loss of 410 of the 608 soldiers involved. In 1855 he was recalled from his command. He later fought at Inkerman, and was promoted fieldmarshal in 1887. |
