| biography:
| British statesman, born in London, UK. He was educated at Eton, served for two years in the dragoons, and in 1813 was returned as a Whig. He was a strong Liberal, his nickname stemming from his reformist views, and in 1821 brought forward a scheme for parliamentary reform much more advanced than that of 1832. In the administration of his father-in-law, Lord Grey (1830), he was Lord Privy Seal, and one of the four persons who drew up the Reform Bill. In 1838 he was appointed Governor-General of Canada, and submitted an influential report on the union of Canada and imperial government. |
