| biography:
| British naval commander, born in Stone, Staffordshire, C England, UK. He entered the navy in 1749, and was made a commander after the Quebec expedition of 1759. He fought at Brest (1778) and in the West Indies (1793), and commanded the Mediterranean fleet (1795). In 1797, during preparations for the invasion of England by French, Dutch, and Spanish fleets, he intercepted them off Cape St Vincent and completely defeated them. Created Earl St Vincent, he was forced by ill health to return home in 1799. As First Lord of the Admiralty (1801–4), he made significant reforms, then resumed the Channel command (1806–7). |
