| biography:
| Biochemist, born in Carrizozo, New Mexico, USA. He was a research assistant at the University of California, Berkeley (1943–9), and a fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital (1949–50), before becoming a biochemist and physiologist at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in Bethesda, MD (1950). An authority on enzyme chemistry, he investigated vitamin B12 function (with wife and collaborator Thressa Stadtman), membrane transport, protein modification in aging, and oxygen toxicity. |
