| Evangelist, born in Northfield, Massachusetts, USA. A shoe salesman in Boston, in 1856 he went to Chicago to engage in missionary work, and founded the Moody Church. In 1870 he was joined by Ira David Sankey (1840–1908). In 1873 and 1883 they visited Great Britain as evangelists, Moody preaching and Sankey singing; afterwards they worked together in America. In 1899 he founded the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. |
