| biography:
| Second son of King George III of Britain. A soldier by profession, he was unsuccessful both in the field in The Netherlands (1793–99) and as British commander-in-chief (1798–1809), and earned the description of the ‘grand old Duke of York’ in the nursery rhyme. However, his painstaking reform of the army proved of lasting benefit, especially to Wellington. He founded the Duke of York's School in London, and is commemorated by the Duke of York's column in Waterloo Place, London. |
