| Soldier of fortune, born in Heidelberg, SWC Germany. During the Thirty Years War he fought for the Dutch (1634–7), then served with the French army (1652–4), and with the Portuguese (1660–8). He became a French citizen (1668) and, though a Protestant, obtained a marshal's baton in 1675. After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685), he retired to Portugal and afterwards took service under the Elector of Brandenburg. He commanded under William of Orange (William III) in the English expedition (1688), became a naturalized English citizen, and was created Duke of Schomberg (1689). As commander-in-chief in Ireland, he conducted the Ulster campaign, but was killed at the Boyne. |
