| English soldier and statesman. He was deputy governor of Calais, and served under Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset, in his Scottish campaigns. Created Earl of Warwick (1546), he was appointed joint regent for Edward VI and High Chamberlain of England (1547). As virtual ruler of England, he was created Duke of Northumberland in 1551 and brought about the downfall and eventual execution of Somerset (1550–2). He married his fourth son, Lord Guildford Dudley, to Lady Jane Grey, and proclaimed her queen on the death of Edward VI, but was executed for treason on the accession of Mary I. |
