| biography:
| Illegitimate son of Charles II of England by Lucy, daughter of Richard Walters of Haverfordwest, born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He was created Duke of Monmouth in 1663, and became captain-general in 1670. He had substantial popular support, and as a Protestant became a focus of opposition to James II. After the discovery of the Rye House Plot (1683), he fled to the Low Countries. In 1685 he landed at Lyme Regis, and asserted his right to the crown. He was defeated at the Battle of Sedgemoor, captured, and beheaded in the Tower of London. |
