| biography:
| Son of King George V and Queen Mary. Educated at Dartmouth Naval College, he served in the foreign office and inspected factories for the home office, the first member of the British royal family to work in the civil service. In 1934 he was created duke, and married Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark (1906–68). He was killed on active service, as chief welfare officer of RAF Home Command, when his Sunderland flying-boat crashed in Scotland. |
