| biography:
| The husband of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, the son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg, born in Corfu, Greece. He studied at Cheam, Gordonstoun, and Dartmouth, and entered the Royal Navy in 1939 as Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten. He became a naturalized British subject in 1947, when he was married to the Princess Elizabeth (20 Nov). Seriously interested in science and the technology of industry, as well as in youth adventure training, he is also a keen sportsman, yachtsman, qualified airman, and conservationist. In 1956 he began the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme to foster the leisure activities of young people. |
