| biography:
| British general, born in London, UK, the second son of George II. He adopted a military career and, in the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–8), was wounded at Dettingen (1743) and defeated at Fontenoy (1745). He crushed the Young Pretender's rebellion at Culloden (1746), and by his harsh policies afterwards earned the lasting title of ‘Butcher’. In the Seven Years' War (1756–63), he surrendered to the French (1757), and thereafter retired. |
