| biography:
| British prince and soldier, born in London, UK, the third son of Queen Victoria. After training at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, he served in Canada, Gibraltar, Egypt, and India (1869–90). Thereafter he was commander-in-chief in Ireland (1900–4) and in the Mediterranean (1907–9), and Governor-General of Canada (1911–16). He was created Duke of Connaught and Strathearn in 1874. In 1879 he married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia (1860–1917). Of their children, Margaret (1882–1920) married the future King Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden in 1905. |
