| biography:
| Dutch ruler, the only son of Jan II. He married Mary of Evreux. He was forced to grant the ‘Walloon charters’ in 1314, giving great political and financial independence to the towns, in return for a grant of 40 000 pounds for Tours, which he needed for his wars with neighbouring rulers. In the Hundred Years War he first supported England, to protect the wool trade, but in 1340, when Jacob van Artevelde recovered the wool staple for Bruges, he switched to France. He died in 1355, leaving the succession to his daughter Johanna, resulting in the War of the Brabant Succession with Flanders and Gelre. |
