| biography:
| Dutch ruler, the son of John I and Margaret of Dampierre. He married Margaret of York, daughter of Edward I of England. He was neutral on England's side, a policy which encouraged English wool imports and cloth exports to France. He suppressed the rebellious trade guilds, but was forced by financial pressure to grant the Charter of Kortenberg in 1312, giving the towns some say in the government of the Duchy. |
