| biography:
| Dutch ruler, the second son of Henry III of Brabant and Aleidis of Burgundy. He succeeded his brother Henry IV on his retirement in 1267. He married Margaret of France in 1270, and after her death in 1271 Margaret of Dampierre, the daughter of Guy of Flanders. He tried to expand his control of the trade route along the great rivers, and consequently fought against Cologne and Gelre. In 1288 he was victorious at the Battle of Woeringen, N of Cologne, and was awarded Limburg by Philip IV of France. The towns supported him financially in return for privileges, as his policies of controlling the Rhine suited their commercial interests. He is also credited with the authorship of several love poems in Middle Dutch. He was killed in a tournament in Antwerp. |
