| biography:
| Youngest daughter of Charles I of Great Britain and Henrietta Maria, and sister of Charles II, born in Exeter, Devon, SW England, UK, while the English civil wars were still at their height. Brought up by her mother in France, she married Louis XIV's homosexual brother Philippe, but was also rumoured to have been for a time the mistress of the French king himself. She played an important part in the negotiations of the Secret Treaty of Dover (1670) between Charles and Louis. There were strong rumours that her subsequent death was caused by poison, although it was more probably a case of a ruptured appendix. |
