| Athenian law-giver. Archon at Athens in 621 BC, he revised the laws of Athens with admirable impartiality; but the severity of his penalty - death for almost every offence - made the strict execution of his code unpopular (hence ‘draconian’), and it was superseded by that of Solon (594 BC). Only his ruling on homicide remained. |
