| Pathologist and paediatrician, born in Asheville, North Carolina, USA. Discoverer of cystic fibrosis (1938) and related diagnostic tests, she did work on congenital heart defects leading to breakthroughs in open-heart surgery. Working at Babies Hospital at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center (1935–63), she became chief pathologist (1952). Independent and free-thinking, she loved the outdoors and carpentry. |
