| Pearl Harbor hero, born near Waco, Texas, USA. An African-American messman aboard the USS Arizona, he voluntarily manned a machine gun and downed four Japanese planes during the attack on Pearl Harbor (1941). He was awarded the Navy Cross and was killed in action in 1943. |
