| biography:
| Aircraft designer and manufacturer, born in New York City, USA. He attended the US Naval Academy and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Chief engineer to the Glenn L Martin Aircraft Company in 1915, in 1920 he set up his own company (Davis–Douglas Co) in California. His Douglas World Cruisers made a historic round-the-world flight in 1924. The prototype for the DC series of commercial transport planes was flown in 1933, and during World War 2 he produced the B-19 bomber and other craft. He was chairman of his company, Douglas Aircraft, until it merged with McDonnell Aircraft as the McDonnell Douglas Corporation in 1967. |
