| US Republican politician, born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. He studied English and economics at Harvard, served as a marine in World War 2, then joined Merrill Lynch, rising to become its president in 1968, and building the company into America's largest securities brokerage corporation. Appointed Treasury secretary in 1981, he became White House chief-of-staff in 1985, but was forced to resign two years later as a result of criticism of his role in the ‘Irangate Affair’ (1985–6). |
