| Sociologist of crime, born in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, USA. An authority on juvenile delinquency, organized crime, embezzlement, and other crimes, he was one of the foremost practising sociologists of crime. After retirement as a teacher from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1962–86), he assumed the presidency of the Institute for Financial Crime Prevention. He served as an adviser to national and state agencies concerned with formulating law and policy, and wrote many books and texts. |
