| Ship builder, born in Shelbourne, Nova Scotia, Canada. Apprenticed in New York, he moved to Newburyport, MA and began to build ships. In 1845 he moved his yard to Boston, where he produced clipper ships for the China trade and other purposes. Several of his clippers held the world record for speed under sail. He built naval vessels during the Civil War. |
