| Philosopher of religion, born in Oban, Argyll and Bute, W Scotland, UK. He studied at Oxford, where he was a fellow of Keble College (1937–47). Professor of moral philosophy at Aberdeen (1947–60), and of the philosophy of religion at Cambridge (1960–78), he explored the relations between theology, metaphysics, and moral philosophy, championing realism over idealism. His 1965–6 Gifford lectures were published as The Problem of Metaphysics (1974). His books include Themes in Theology (1988). |
