| Australian politician, born in Melbourne, Victoria, SE Australia. He studied at the University of Melbourne, and entered the federal parliament as the Liberal member for Higinbotham, Victoria, in 1960. He remained in the House of Representatives until he became a senator for Victoria in 1977. He founded the Australian Democrats in 1977, a party which aimed to be a centre group that would ‘keep the bastards honest’. He was the Democrats' parliamentary leader from 1978 until 1986, when he retired. |
